Press Release: Transgender Day of Remembrance

On the occasion of International Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), which is held on this day the 20th November 2018. The Haus of Khameleon calls on the State to further its commitments on the protection and promotion of Human Rights for every Fijian especially for Transgender people and recognizing Transgender Rights as Human Rights.

"Transgender Day of Remembrance is a day to honor, celebrate, commemorate and recognise the voices of Transgender people across Fiji and to raise awareness on the multiple intersecting forms of Violence and Discrimination targeted at Transgender people and to honor the lives of those who might otherwise be forgotten; it is also a time to bring spotlight on Transgender people that have been murdered in Fiji simply for being Trans ” says Trans Feminist Activist, Miki Wali.

Transgender people in Fiji and across the world are victims of horrifying hate violence, including physical and sexual assaults and murder, which often go unreported in most cases and data on violence against Transgender people are not systematically produced and it is impossible to estimate the actual number of cases. Violence against Transgender people frequently overlaps with other axes of oppression prevalent in society like discrimination.
.
“Transgender people should be able to live in a society without fear, intimidation, and harm and part of any democratization processes is really about engagement and being inclusive of communities like the Transgender community here in Fiji and the Haus of Khameleon will keep advocating for the rights of Transgender people” Wali continued.

The Haus of Khameleon notes efforts by various actors within Government and looks forward to working alongside various actors to better the response on Anti Transgender crimes targeted at Transgender people in Fiji. It is now time for all the Government of Fiji and all others to act on the fundamental protection of Transgender People in Fiji.
